What’s the problem with Palm Oil?

The cultivation of palm oil, an ingredient found in a multitude of food, cosmetic and cleaning products, has led to the loss of vast swathes of rainforest in the tropical countries where it is produced. In Sumatra, the palm oil industry has had a catastrophic impact on the forest homes of orangutans, elephants, tigers and rhinos.

The solution is not to boycott palm oil, however. It’s a productive crop and has helped lift millions of Indonesians out of poverty. Instead, we need to help the industry become sustainable by creating demand for deforestation-free palm oil. The hospitality sector can make a big difference and be part of the solution.

What is a Sustainable Palm Oil City?

We have been working hard for over a decade to break the link between the production of palm oil and the loss of incredible rainforests and the wildlife that call them home. When our friends at Chester Zoo came up with the concept of Sustainable Palm Oil Cities, we thought this sounded like a great way to engage businesses and their customers in taking positive action for wildlife and rainforests. We were delighted to help them kick off the first campaign in Chester in 2017 and cheered them on when they achieved Sustainable Palm Oil City status in March 2019. Now we’re launching the campaign in our hometown, Oxford.

This campaign aims to change the way the hospitality sector buys palm oil, increasing demand for sustainable, deforestation-free palm oil. We have high hopes that Oxford can join together as a community, committed to sustainable palm oil and delivering real conservation impact.

Who do we want to partner with?

We are looking for partners in the hospitality and food service sector within the city of Oxford and a 10 mile radius. Partners will include:
· Restaurants, cafes, hotels and fast food outlets;
· Workplaces that offer staff catering services;
· Schools, colleges and universities, council food outlets, and hospitals;
· Manufacturers;
· Visitor attractions and leisure facilities.

Find out more and get involved

We would love you to join us on Thursday 4th September to hear more about the campaign, what we're trying to achieve and what will be involved for participating businesses and organisations.

You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have about sustainable palm oil and how to become a Sustainable Palm Oil Champion, and hear from a local business that has already started on their journey towards sourcing sustainable palm oil.

With your help, we can turn Oxford into a Sustainable Palm Oil City - and deliver real conservation impact for endangered species such as orangutans, and their rainforest homes.

I do hope you’ll be able to join us. If you can’t make it to the event, but would be interested in hearing more, please do get in touch, and we’ll be happy to talk you through the campaign.
